I have two articles in the September 2012 issue of the Canterbury Index magazine. The first is a look at some of the history of pubs in and around Canterbury. The second is an interview article with the wonderful comedian, writer and broadcaster, Jon Holmes. As always, click on the pictures to open up a bigger version…
You can go to the online version of the magazine by clicking on the link below. The pubs article is on pages 10-11, and the Jon Holmes one is on page 13:

Yay, you are awesome! Hi 5!
Well of course, I’m a Limebird aren’t I!
Oh yeahhhhh
Congratulations!
Thank you Janna!
You’re welcome.
As we say here in the U.S., You go, Girl!
And as we say here in the UK – Thank you!
Many congratulations, Vanessa – this is excellent!
Thank you, it’s always nice to see your name in print isn’t it!
Vanessa,
Congratulations! Hanging around you is only good for my street cred.
Le Your Best Friend Clown
Well when I was writing them, that’s all I could think about – “I hope this will make Le Clown consider me worthy to hang around”.
Yay Vanessa! Congratulations. What a wonderful feeling it must be, even though it isn’t your first publication–just to see your name and all your words that you wrote in print. Magnificent.
Yes, it never gets boring! I’ve had articles in several editions of this magazine, and it happens to be a magazine that gets delivered to my work – they send batches out to lots of businesses around. On more than one occasion I have been walking through reception and seen someone with the magazine open reading one of my articles! Not that I keep obsessively walking backwards and forwards through reception hoping to see someone reading it…much!
Wonderful, Vanessa. I am thrilled.
Thanks Kate, I’m thrilled that you’re thrilled!
It’s the biggest thrill of my life.
Ab Fab!
Thanks Mr T!
Very cool! Congratulations, and awesome interview!
Thank you – I was a fan of his anyway, so it was exciting to get to interview him!
That’s terrific, Vanessa! I’ll have to go read those articles today.
Article writing is very amorphous, to me. (I tried submitting to a few college magazines when I was a student, but did not make the cut.) I’m curious: do you get assignments to write particular pieces from a specific magazine/editor, or can you write what interests you and then submit to any takers? Or, some mix of both? It seems very different from shopping a short story or novel, but I could be wrong; maybe you do need an agent or representative speaking on your behalf.
With the Canterbury Index, the magazine only launched just over a year ago, and in their first issue they were asking for writers to submit article ideas to them, so I did and they said yes! Since then I’ve written several for them – I quite regularly suggest article ideas or local people to interview, and sometimes they say yes to those and commission me to write them, but they’ve also come to me with ideas and asked if I would like to write them.
I have never written a piece and then seen if there are any takers, I have only submitted ideas to magazines. But other people do write the full article and then try and sell it. So you’re right, there are different ways of doing it.
With magazine articles, you often have to provide the photographs to accompany the article; I have with all the the Canterbury Index articles. Mostly I ask the people I am writing about for photos, but on one occasion when they didn’t have anything suitable I had to persuade a professional photographer friend of mine to take some for me.
Having now read the pub article, I have to ask: did you get to sample any of the food and/or beer? If so, did you have a favorite?
Unfortunately no! For this article my research was just online and through phone conversations with the pub landlords. As this was just meant to be a factual piece, rather than a review, I didn’t need to actually sample things. A few of the pubs I had been to before anyway.
Awesomeness! Congrats. Very nice looking articles. You should be proud.
Thank you – I always like the general look and feel of the magazine; modern and fresh, so yes, I’m always proud when I’m in it!
Magnificent research and article. We also say: you go girl, and you ROCK.Congratulations.
Thank you – it’s nice to rock!
Cool beans! You’re an excellent magazine writer!
Very kind of you to say so, thank you!
Wonderful! I’m so happy for you!
Thank you, I’m so happy for me too!
Fabulous news. Keep up the great work
Thanks Pete
