I’ve Had Two More Articles Published

Regular readers of my blog will know that whenever I have an article published, I post it on here. I would like to point out that this isn’t just so that I can show off, no, that’s only PART of the reason. The other reason is so that I can file them all under ‘Published’ at the top of the page and then I have a nice handy dandy link to send people when I want to showΒ them examples of my work. Shall I get on with it now?

Firstly, a music article I wrote for the Canterbury Index magazine, ‘Sounds of the City’. Note also how it is the main featured article on the cover (I’m not showing off or anything) –

And if you can’t read it from the picture, then the online version is available here, pages 12/13: http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1ypyz/TheCanterburyIndexIs/resources/index.htm

Secondly, an article in the general women’s interest section of Parent Guide News, ‘Beware of the Frenemy’. I have Nicola Davies to thank for getting this one. Thank you Nicola!

    • Thank you. Don’t worry, you don’t have to read them, I won’t be testing you or anything…although, maybe some kind of quiz would be fun! πŸ™‚

      • They’re both very nice pieces. Now here’s my quiz:

In Vanessa Jane-Chapman’s Article “Beware of the Frenemy” in ParentGuide:
which three recommendations does she make when a friend turns out to be an enemy?

        1) Stay Cordial, 2) Say, “Listen Sistah, b*tch. I’m going to cut you if you don’t
stop this sh*t, 3) Work at the relationship, 4) Hire a contract killer, and/or 5)Terminate the friendship (not to be confused with number 4).

Which of the following bands or artists are associated with the Canterbury Sound?
        1) Spyogyra, 2) Caravan, 3) The Canterbury Tales, 4) Ben Mills, 5) Hayley Mills,
        6) Pill Mills

        Congrats again. Randy

  2. What I love about magazines are the eye catching pictures that go along with them. Celebrate every victory, my friend

    • Yes, with the Canterbury Index I have to provide the pictures too, so I’m glad you find them eye-catching! Sourcing the pictures and getting the permissions to use them can be the most time-consuming part.

      • Good luck! I’ll read it! And I’m hoping to get one of mine out there, too. There can never be too many books!

        • I haven’t actually started writing mine yet! I’ve had an idea for one brewing for a while, well I’ve had an idea for three brewing for a while, but I’ve picked one of them that I’m going to tackle by doing NaNoWriMo this year – I know that even if I manage the 50,000 words in the month, I’ll still have a lot more work to do afterwards, but at least I’ll have hopefully made a very good start!

  8. Wonderful! How do you get a line on what places are looking for what kinds of articles? I need to get little things published and I’m a little “gun shy…”

    • I don’t really know the “proper” way of doing it, I’ve just kind of fallen into it. With the Canterbury Index, it was a new publication last year, and in their first issue they said they were looking for writers to pitch ideas to them. So I gave it a shot, and suggested a monthly ‘Day in the Life of’ feature on local people of interest, and they said yes! So I did a few of those, and I’ve also done a few other articles for them, some of which have been ones I’ve suggested, and some have been ones they’ve asked if I would like to do. With the Parent Guide News, it was someone I know who had originally pitched that idea for an article to them, but via a complicated route I ended up doing it instead. I keep thinking I need to start pitching to more magazines now that I have all these under my belt, but I’ve done very little of that so far! Often on the website for magazines they do specify whether they accept unsolicited articles, or who you should address article suggestions to. Often with magazines they like you to provide the photographs too, I have with all the Canterbury Index ones, so do keep that in mind, that can be the most difficult part!

  11. Wonderful, wonderful. The Canterbury link gave me a smidge of trouble so I couldn’t read the article. Wow, you must provide the pics. The layout is awesome. No problem with Parent Guide article. Congratulations, Vanessa!

    • Thanks T! Yes that Canterbury link can be tricky. Thankfully I don’t have to do the layout, I just send the words and pictures and they do the rest! I do like the syle and layout of that magazine.
