I’m a bit late to the party but…

A hand with five fingers, each one with a hand

A few bloggers have been doing this 5×5 thing – Benzeknees came up with 5 topics for people to preference on (yes, “to preference on” is proper grammar in Vanessa’s Book of Invent Your Own Grammar, 2nd Edition). A few of my blogging buddies took part, such as Carrie Rubin and Rarasaur. I haven’t been as bloggingly active as usual lately, either in posting or visiting others, not through lack of interest or ideas, just lack of time. Anyway, I felt like giving this 5×5 a go, albeit a few weeks later than everyone else. Here goes…

5 Things I Am Passionate About
(I don’t think this one was meant to be about food, but I’m hungry, so I’ve chosen to interpret it in that way)

Cadbury Creme Eggs
Cheese (I couldn’t possibly narrow it down)
Pick ‘n mix from the cinema
Ice-cream (many kinds)
(That was about 5 wasn’t it?)

5 Things I Would Like to Do Before I Die

Publish a book
Do more acting
Do more singing
Travel more
Win the lottery more…or at all

5 Things I Say A Lot

“In fairness…”
“Do you know what I mean?”
“I don’t get it”
“I’m so tired”
“That’s so funny!”

5 Books or Magazines I have Read Lately
(I realise this selection makes it look either like I’m trying to appear highly intellectual, or that I’m just very dull, but while I’m studying I really have no time to read any books or magazines that aren’t related to my course, I barely have time to answer blogging quizzes about myself! At least I haven’t gone the whole way and listed these in Harvard referencing style)

Quantitative Methods in Educational Research: The Role of Numbers Made Easy – S. Gorard

Contemporary Theories of Learning. Learning Theorists in Their Own Words – K. Illeris

Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture – P. Bourdieu

Writing Your Dissertation: How to Plan, Prepare and Present Successful Work – D. Swetnam

Critical Theory, A Very Short Introduction – S. Bronner

(Sorry about that, ask me this again in a year’s time and the list might be more…more what? Or do I mean less?…less what? Well, different anyway!).

5 Favourite Movies

All of Me
Groundhog Day
Being John Malcovitch (Just because it’s so hilariously bonkers!)
The Full Monty
Finding Nemo
Being There
Love Actually
Back to the Future
The Devil Wears Prada
Gorillas in the Mist
Working Girl
(Again, that was about 5 wasn’t it? I feel I should have had some more intellectual choices in there, but never mind, it’s a nice balance to my book list. I’m sure I’ll think of lots more I should have included later.)

EDIT: Wait! I just remembered two more movies that have to go on the list:
50 First Dates
Letters to Juliet.

Well there we go. If you want to join in, then please link back to Benzeknees so that she can see how widely it has gone. Or feel free to just answer any or all of them in the comments section below…

  1. “Pick ‘n mix from the cinema”—Yummy, what’s this about? I’m not familiar with it. All we have in our theaters are gigantic over-priced popcorn tubs and beverage containers along with boxes of candy and an occasional rubbery hot dog or preservative-rich nachos.

I thought your reading list was very interesting, actually. Especially the first and second book. I took a course in my MPH training about educational theories. Really enjoyed it. Of course, I’ve forgotten them all by now, but I enjoyed it at the time…

    Thanks for the mention!

    • We have all of that at the cinema too! I think you have Pick ‘n mix over there, but maybe call it something different – it’s like rows of containers of different candies with little shovels in the them, and you grab a tub and shovel in the ones you want from all the different containers, and then your tub is weighed and you pay per weight. A lot of the candies are ones that we had as kids, so it’s a bit of a nostalgic thing too. The trouble is, it’s all too easy to overfill your tub, so you spend a fortune and overdose on sugar! They have them at other places besides the cinema, but that is where I like them best!

  2. That picture disturbs me on so many levels 🙂

Your reading list makes me smile.

  3. I count to five like you do–and I am always late to the party

  4. I like your food list. My 5 would be very similar…in content and length. Sushi would be number one though…oh, and maybe cheesecake…and brownies. I’d better stop. Good luck with your classes. Sounds busy, busy, busy.

    • Oh my food list wasn’t in any particular order, I couldn’t possibly order them, it was bad enough trying to narrow it down to that many! You’re right about brownies though, that was an oversight. Thanks Char.

  5. Oh for a hand like that… love your lists, your reading could do with a little variance, but I read into it a Dissertation somewhere … what is your PhD?
Miss you around here but now know why… good luck on it…

  6. That image has freaked me out!

  7. Yes, but what are you wearing?!

  8. Never too late to join the party! Thanks for posting this. I can’t say I even recognize any of the books but also liked a lot of your movies!

  9. I though “to preference on” was one of those adorable British colloquialism I love so much.

That dissertation-writing one looks particularly pailful. All sympathy to you and your eyeballs.

OH! I have a fun Gorillas in the Mist story. Do you mind?

I went to see Martin Scorsese’s Last Temptation of Christ when it came out. The theater was being picketed by angry Catholics who had not seen the movie yet. Anyway. Just before the movie started, a tall woman sat in front of me. Blocked my view, she did! I got kind of angry and was going to give her the fish-eye but when she turned to the side I saw it was Sigourney Weaver! The lights went down and the first coming-attraction preview was for Gorillas in the Mist. How surreal! Sitting through your own trailer. I thought to myself, “I should ask her how it ends.”

  10. The hand image is creepy. 😀
I like the way you count. After the count of three, I usually say, “And another one, and another one,” until I’ve finished my list. 🙂
The food and movie list are my favorites.By the way, your reading list gives me a headache. I hardly have time for anything light these days, let alone one with meat on it. Good for YOU.

  11. Okay you my dear have some seriously delicious food up there! So Yay for that list as Inion N. Mathair, loves food!! On the other, your a lady with a wicked sense of humor. That shows in your movie selections. Which by the way, We absolutely ♥♥ Working Girl & Inion has a big crush on Harrison Ford. And, Groundhog Day, which was written by the late, great, Harold Ramis, who also had a wicked sense of humor & was brilliant! Excellent choices my dear!

  12. By the way~ where did you get that pic?? That is a great picture!!! 😉

  13. I have a very visceral response to the photo. Something akin to making my skin crawl. I’m thinking I’ll have nightmares tonight.

Love the reading list. And I’m wondering if your dissertation involves new math, the kind that allows for your kind of fives. Something logarithmic, perhaps?

    • More and more I’m thinking it was a mistake to use that photo! I do hope you don’t get nightmares as a result.

No, nothing to do with maths or anything like that! Glad you liked the reading list though 🙂

  14. Lobster? You really need to visit Maine then. I hear it’s pretty good.

I loved your lists. I would say before I die, I want to try acting again. I haven’t done it since high school. Also, I have been in choirs all my life and I miss singing so much. Now that I’m older, I find it hard to hold a note for very long. I actually auditioned for a local choir last year and made it, then had a hard time keeping up with the alto section. I’m much better singing in the shower.

Also, to have something published (anything!) would be nice.

As for the movies, I also LOVED Groundhog Day. And Inception. I have a major crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

    • Maine you say? For lobster? Who knew!

I still do an occasional bit of acting and an occasional bit of singing, it’s really the need to have a regular day job that prevents me from doing more, well with the acting anyway.

I have had a few magazine articles published in the past, but I really want that book! (I guess I need actually finish a book before that can happen though, there’s always a catch isn’t there!).

  15. I love that you only have to read a “Very Short Introduction” to Critical Theory, haha!

    • Ha! Well there isn’t actually anything specific that we have to read, those books are my choices. Critical theory is such a big area I felt I need a short introduction to start me off, but even the “Very Short Introduction” is 120 pages!

  17. I love how you ignored the “5” things. It’s hard to love just five things. I love a lot to the movies on your list. The Devil Wears Prada is a good one! Yes, you need some fun to balance all the academics. Boy, you’ve been busy!

  18. I can never limit my favorite anythings to a specific number… yours were interesting, though. Want to write a book, eh? 😉

  19. I think Back to the Future and Inception are worthy of any list. 🙂

  20. I might have included various types of chocolate 5 times on the passionate list…. 😉 This sounds like such an interesting post to do, but it seems that when I try to think about completing a list like this, I draw an absolute and total blank! It’s worse than coming up with the perfect rejoinder hours after I needed it. 🙂

    • I spotted a few comments at the bottom of this last post I hadn’t replied to! I did consider more chocolate items on there, but in the end left it with just one. I do like doing posts like this, but sometimes I over-anguish over picking what to include and then have to remind myself that it doesn’t actually matter THAT much 🙂

  21. Too bad none of the books you’re currently reading were on the topic of Math so they could explain that whole #5 phenomenon. However, if I had to read all that stuff I would be (even more) brain dead, too.

    • Maybe when I’ve finished this course I’ll be so clever that I’ll be able to write a book to explain that whole (I can’t find the hashtag on my keyboard) 5 phenomenon, then that will also tick the “publish a book” thing off my list, perfect.

  22. Better late than never, babe!
