I’m a Writer at lifehack.org Now

A few weeks ago I applied, and was accepted, to be one of the writers at lifehack.org. Below are the first four articles I wrote for them. All four of these are article ideas and titles that the lifehack guys came up with, and I just wrote, but I also have a couple of my own article ideas pitched to them, waiting for approval. Plus I’ve completed a couple of other articles for them which are waiting to be edited and published.

It’s not a paid position, but it is good exposure – the first article I wrote for them, (the beach one), which was published on 29 May, has received over 60,000 shares at the time of writing this. They won’t all be like that, the supermarket one which was published three days later has only received about 150 shares. I say “only” but if one of my posts on this blog was shared 150 times, I’d be thrilled to bits! There’s a wide variance in how much the lifehack.org articles are shared, you just never know which ones will snowball. The most recent one, about fearless mindsets, which was published on Saturday seems to be starting quite strongly with several hundred shares so far in the first couple of days.

Aside from the exposure, and probably more importantly for me, it’s a good writing discipline because I’m writing to a spec and to a deadline, so it keeps me writing, and I’m finding it all very enjoyable.  I also have to search out the photos to accompany the articles, and so far this has taken me longer than the actual writing, trying to find the ideal photo each time, but hopefully I’ll get quicker on that. Anyway, here are the four so far, in the order they were published, if you fancy reading any of them…

  3. Adored the archaic words article. As a word nerd this is the stuff that keeps me happy. How did you come across the site–I wasn’t aware it existed. Beats Yahoo’s articles for browsing.

  6. This is very exciting, Vanessa. Congrats! I’ve read three of the four, so I’ll have to scurry over to the fourth. Wonderful to see you get the exposure you deserve.

    • Thanks Carrie. (There’s a couple of typos in them, did you spot them? Sshhh! I can’t edit articles after they’ve been published and it’s not so easy to get changes made, ah well, I’ll have to be more careful from now on!)

      • No, I didn’t spot them, and I bet no one else did either! We’re always more aware of our own mistakes. I learned of two typos in my first book after it was published, and I about went insane because I couldn’t change it. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how they slipped by me after reading it a zillion times!

      • Most people’s brains will do auto correct for errors – but it does drive writers ( and some English teachers) nutty. Not to worry – just move on. Happens to everyone whether they want to admit it or not!

  7. All four are stupendous. Congratulations, Vanessa! I especially the the word article. Some you can guess the meaning off, others are just funny but I like the words. Hope they come back into use. ❤ ❤

  8. Whoot! Congratulations! You deserve it. You certainly worked for it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m particularly interested in learning some old (olde) English terms.

  13. Congrats on the gig! My favorite is the article on Old English terms. Hilarious! I must copy these and discuss them with my family. Several apply. The article about beaches is my next favorite. I did, however, get sucked into the black hole of life hack articles, because they keep suggesting more based on the one you’ve just read. The ADD articles, for example….got lost there for half an hour. 😀

  14. This is so cool, Vanessa! I’m really fond of some of those 24 words—I can think of a few folks who fudgel. 😉 And some rawgabbits and ultracrepidarians!

I’m looking forward to more of these!

  15. Congrats on your new writing position. Sounds like a great gig. I would love to do something like that more often, but it’s the “no pay” part that makes it hard to do on a regular basis. Regardless, the experience is just as valuable as a paycheck, so enjoy and have fun!

  16. You ARE a superstar. These are so much FUN! I had to read the beach one right away, since that would be my dream, to live by/on the beach full time. You came up with the 18 things all yourself? Because you know what? They were fabulous. They made me smile. And pout a little (because I don’t live on the beach — yet). Great gig – keep it up. 60,000 shares? Ye gad!!!!

    • I love living near the beach! I’m not right on it now, it’s like 10 minutes drive, but I’ve previously lived 50 metres from it. The 18 things were a combination of my own experiences, along with doing some research about what things people who live by the beach have to say about it. I think the lifehack people asked for there to be a minimum of 10 things – they generally specify a minimum but not a maximum on list posts.

  21. The article about the beach makes me miss it sooo much! Every bit of that is true. Great read! I also loved the one about helping your children overcome fears (the irrational ones). Great advice – I’ll use it. Thank you! Congrats on your new writing job – fantastic!

  26. Vanessa, you are doing a terrific job. I am also a writer on LifeHack. I am 6 articles in and haven’t had one post yield me 76k shares. I’m sure that I’ll achieved such a feat in time though.

There are 100+ LifeHack writers. Yet, I feel that it misses a sense of community. I have made several attempts to try connect with the other writers there. I’d be happy to connect with you sometime soon.
