A Year of Food and Selfies

I’ve never been very good at keeping a journal, but over the last few years I’ve enjoyed doing a little something different to record the year in some way. In 2014 I did a word-a-day journal, in 2016 I did views from my bedroom window on the last Sunday of every month, and…wait, what happened to 2015? Didn’t I do something like that in 2015? I guess not.

Well 2017 might have been a very poor blogging year for me;Β  I haven’t blogged since April (eek!), but I did maintain something over the year to present on here now. On the first of every month I took a selfie pic, and also wrote down everything I ate and drank that day. I know that might seem very random, and it is. There’s no particular reason for it, it just came to me as something to do.

And there you have it, a glimpse into my year through food and selfies. I will admit that two of the photos are a couple of days out of being taken on the first (simply because I forgot to take them on the first), but literally only a couple of days out, so close enough. The food and drink is all totally accurate for those dates. I found it particularly interesting looking back on what I’d eaten and drunk. I was surprised that alcohol featured on each of the twelve, I did consider removing a few of those before posting, but hey, if I’m not going to be honest with it then there’s little point in doing it.

I feel so out of touch with the blogging world, this is the longest I haven’t blogged since I started. Hopefully doing this will kick me back into it. So, what’ya all been up to then?

  1. Happy New Year, Vanessa. I’ve missed you … Figured you vanquished from this place, so this post was a pleasant surprise. Interesting concept for a post – but very good considering the day. Hope all is well.

  2. Happy New Year, Vanessa! Your selfies always make me smile. I’m so glad we met this summer!!!

    • Thanks Susie, and to you! Yes it was lovely to meet you, I’ve been meaning to post since then! It’s funny, when you get out of the routine of it you suddenly feel like you don’t have time for it, even though you made time before when you were just as busy! I don’t know why I’m saying ‘you’ when I mean ‘me’ πŸ˜€

  3. What a cute idea you have here. But I must admit, some of your meals were so sparse my stomach growled. πŸ˜„

Good to see a post from you, Vanessa, no matter how infrequent. Happy 2018 to you!

  4. I had been wondering why you weren’t blogging – I’d been missing it! Also, have you abandoned the food blog? I always enjoyed that. This post on the food and selfies was really interesting. You’re the most photogenic person I’ve ever known. But how can you skip breakfast? I don’t get going in the morning without eating. Keep the posts coming!

    • Hello Lorinda, it’s always nice to be missed! Well I’ve really abandoned both blogs for many months, but I plan to revive both this year, I won’t set myself specific goals with either though because goals never really work for me, I’ll just say that I’m generally aiming to blog more again!

I’m a bit varied with breakfast, I used to always want to eat first thing but now it’s usually a couple of hours before I feel like eating anything, so depending on where I am and what I’m doing, breakfast does end up getting skipped sometimes.

  6. Hi there, Vanessa! I’ve been awful about blogging as well…perhaps this post will inspire me to start again.

I laughed as I noticed alcohol was on all of your menus. I thought chocolate was going to be as well but you wimped out part way through! So, your meal skipping, is that because you were too busy and it slipped your mind or were you contemplating dieting? It makes me wonder what mine would look like if I did the same.

    • Let’s hope we are both inspired to start again!

I’m not a big chocolate eater actually, I occasionally get really in the mood for it and love it, but other times I can take it or leave it.

I was surprised at how many skipped meals there were actually. I don’t think I deliberately choose to skip meals anytime, I’m just a bit random in when I eat. When my kids were younger I think we made more effort to eat three meals a day, but now they are older teens they’re often out doing their own thing, and plus my Neil is not one for insisting on having proper meals at set times or anything, so yes, it’s just how it works out!

  7. So lovely to see you again, Vanessa! How do you manage to have such a smooth forehead?! πŸ™‚ Quite a few skipped meals there, but the dinners, esp. seem mighty tasty. Here’s to (hopefully) blogging more in 2018. Happy new year! And I wonder what all you’d have to write down alcohol-wise if you’d been doing the LAST of each month, esp. given last night! πŸ˜‰ (Well, likely two nights ago when you read this.)

  9. So good to see you blogging, and I hope you keep it up. But I am well aware of the time and energy commitment. It ain’t easy. Liked your meal rundown. Don’t fret about the alcohol. You’re a writer, after all. πŸ˜‰ Happy New Year!

    • Thanks Kate, I hope I do too. It is indeed a time and energy commitment, however as we both know, we do also have a certain amount of choice about where we allocate our time and energy, so I try not to say I don’t have time for it, I should just say I haven’t chosen to allocate time to it lately!

  10. What do you mean ‘might have’ been a poor blogging year? I’d say it was sorely lacking.

What’s with all the ‘nothing’ mentions? How do you get through the day skipping meals? That can’t make things easy.

Where is that December pic taken?

Oh, welcome back, by the way. Your posts have been missed. I didn’t want to leave that out.

    • Sorely lacking indeed!

Well as I replied to a couple of others above, I was actually surprised how many skipped meals there were! I had no idea I skipped so many meals. It is only 12 days out of 365, so I wonder if it’s coincidence that there were several within there, or whether that is representative of how I eat in general! I am quite random in my eating times so it probably is fairly representative.

That December pic is taken in a hall in the House of Commons. I organised an event there to launch a research report. That was one of the pics that was a couple of days out on date, it was 29 November – I completely forgot to take a pic on 1 December, so it was just luck that I had taken one a couple of days before there.

Thanks for the welcome back, hope you are well.

  11. Happy New Year, Vanessa! You might remember me from… Geez 18 months ago was my last post! And that was about a change in direction. Focusing more on photography so I can shoot my own book covers. Properly. Slow progress.
Love the monthly selfie idea. Ingenious and far less time consuming adaptation of the teen version where it’s done several times daily! πŸ˜‰ And I love the textual description of the food and drink. Again a unique take on the facebook and Instagram craze where people actually photograph their meals and bevies! I wonder if it will catch on.
One of my new years resolutions is to tone down my sarcasm. I plan to start that tomorrow. πŸ˜‰

  12. I noticed your absence. I always enjoyed both of your blogs. So many bloggers have simply faded away, it’s nice to see you hanging in there.

  13. I always appreciate your creative spark that you bring to the otherwise mundane world of blogging journaling. Besides beverage revelations, what else surprised you?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Why thank you. I was a bit surprised at how disorganised my meals looked, with several skipped meals, and some meals that just sounds like snacks. I think that’s probably because usually the only time we see daily meals written out in that way is in some kind of diet plan, where it’s all thought through and planned properly, so I was expecting to see something that looked more like that, rather than the randomness that it is.

  14. Happy New Year and welcome back! That was a fascinating post – I love reading about what people eat and drink. And you have pricked my blogging conscience as I have not blogged since October – feeling guilty (why? it is not compulsory….). Will get started again, following your example.

  15. Fantastically random. I like it. You also skip too many meals! Your diet is varied though and reading your post made me hungry.

I seem to have only been posting on New Years’ Days so we both need a kick start for 2018. Good luck!

“I haven’t blogged since April…” Good for you. Means you’ve been having fun doing other things than running around after the digital “Master”. Keep up the good work πŸ™‚

  18. Vanessa it’s awesome to see you again – even if I have arrived a little late at the party!
I hadn’t blogged for months either, until the other day, life seems to always get in the way…
I really love this! What a great idea.
